General Information
Interdisciplinary research among
Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Physiology and Medicine has
enabled significant progress in understanding the dynamics, function
and dysfunction of biological membranes and lipid storage and
mobilization, and the significance of these processes for human health
and disease.
Lipotoxicity is referred to as the anomalous uptake, generation, and
activity of lipid derivatives mediating adverse, "lipotoxic" effects
including dysregulation of metabolic pathways, cell- and organelle
dysfunction, and cell death. The meeting will address lipotoxicity as a
pathological basis of prevalent human diseases, such as obesity, type 2
diabetes and atherosclerosis. Recent discoveries of molecular processes
that can induce or prevent lipotoxicity and that are expected to
contribute to the identification of valid targets for disease
intervention will be discussed.
The 4th Graz Symposium is organized by the SFB LIPOTOX, a
networking program supported by the Austrian Science Fund FWF, the City of Graz, and
the County of Styria. It is supported by the PhD program "Molecular
Enzymology", "Metabolic and Cardiovascular Disease", and the Lipidomics Research Center Graz initiative, a node in the EU
LipidomicsNet.
